Description
MOTILIUM is a medicine that increases the movements or contractions of the stomach and bowel. It is used to treat symptoms of stomach disorders. MOTILIUM is also used to treat nausea and vomiting caused by other drugs used to treat Parkinson's disease.
|
Directions
Each patient will be prescribed a dose of MOTILIUM as seen fit by their healthcare professional. Strictly follow these instructions or the directions on the label. Do not change your dose unless your healthcare professional advises you. The number of pills each patient takes daily, the time lapse between doses, and the length of time you take MOTILIUM depend on the medical problem for which you are taking this medication. Generally, MOTILIUM is taken 15-30 minutes before meal time.
|
Cautions
MOTILIUM may not be the right medication for you. Your doctor will advise you whether or not to take this medication or suggest any dose adjustments. Speak to your doctor if:
- you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
- you are breast-feeding or wish to breast-feed
- you have/had liver or kidney disease
- you have ever had breast cancer
- you are not able to digest lactose, which is a sugar found in milk and milk products
Consult your physician before you start taking MOTILIUM to confirm that you are not allergic to it or any other chemicals contained in this medicine. Inform your physician of any medications that you are taking, including prescription, non-prescription and/or herbal supplements. Do not take this medication if you have any of the following conditions:
- you have a tumor of the pituitary gland called prolactinoma
- experience severe belly cramps or persistent black stools
- have or had liver disease
- bleeding, obstruction or perforation in the stomach and intestines
- increase in stomach or bowel contractions
- if you are taking other medication that contains the active ingredient ketoconazole, fluconazole or voriconazole (used to treat fungal infections)
- if you are taking another medication that contains the active ingredient amiodarone (used to treat rapid heart rate)
|
Side Effects
As with all medications, MOTILIUM can have some side effects. At times they may be serious, but mostly they are not. Do not be alarmed by this list of possible side effects as you may not experience any of them. Consult your doctor if you have any questions about this medication.
Tell your healthcare professional if you experience any of the following:
- dry mouth
- swelling of the breast in males
- headache
- hives
- hot flashes
- itching of skin, redness
- pain or swelling of eye
- menstrual irregularities
- allergic reactions (rash or urticaria)
- abdominal cramps
- dystonic reactions (extrapyramidal phenomena)
- reversible raised serum prolactin levels
- hypertensivity
It is very important to visit your healthcare professional to check your progress regularly. This way the doctor can monitor the medication’s effects and assess if the medicine is working properly. If the symptoms do not improve within a few days or if they become worse, contact your healthcare professional.
Special precautions: Since MOTILIUM is highly metabolized in the liver, it should be used with caution in patients with hepatic impairment and in the elderly.
